No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
