Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which included plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The judges found that the rioters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
