Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
